Tension
The ox bears the first weight: one end is undifferentiated unity, the other the outrushing primal force. The tension of this path is how pure potential takes its first step without ceasing to be pure.
Essay
Aleph is the first letter, the ox — its pictograph is the horned head of the beast that pulls the plough — and its numerical value is one, the number before there is any second thing to count against it. In the Sefer Yetzirah it is one of the three mother letters, and the mothers carry the three elements between them; Aleph is assigned to Air, the medium that is everywhere and grasped nowhere, the breath in which every later sound is shaped. It is often called silent, a letter that holds a place for voice without being voiced itself.
Where this path is fastened is not agreed among the traditions. This site draws the Tree in the arrangement associated with the Vilna Gaon, the GRA, which runs Aleph across the top between Wisdom and Understanding — the outrushing seed of thought and the vessel that gives it form. The later Golden Dawn attribution, noted here as an alternative, sets it higher still, between the Crown and Wisdom. Either way the ox bears the first weight: one end an undifferentiated unity, the other the primal force breaking out of it. The tension of the path is how pure potential takes its first step without ceasing to be pure — how a beginning becomes something particular without already spending itself.
If Aleph is drawn, let it be a contemplation and not a forecast. Sit, in the manner of hitbonenut, with the breath you did not have to invent, and with the pause before a word forms in you. Notice what in your life is still all potential, not yet committed to a shape, and ask whether you can let it stay open a little longer rather than closing it too soon around a plan. Nothing here predicts an outcome; the letter only arranges your attention at the threshold where things begin.
