Tension
A door both divides and connects. This path stands between the deep poles of bestowing and receiving: opened, the two sides pour into each other; shut, each withers alone — and the door's own art is knowing when to swing.
Essay
Daleth is the door — its pictograph is the tent-flap or the hinged leaf — and its value is four, the number of the enclosed square, the walls a door lets through. Among the seven double letters of the Sefer Yetzirah, each with a hard and a soft sound, Daleth is assigned to Venus, the star of attraction and of what is given and received between people. It is the letter of the threshold, the thing that both divides and connects.
Traditions differ on where the path is set. This site follows the GRA arrangement, which runs Daleth across the top of the Tree between Understanding and Severity — the vessel that gives form and the blade that measures it, two faces of the pillar of limitation. The later Golden Dawn attribution, noted here as an alternative, places it higher, between Wisdom and Understanding. On the path the door stands between the deep poles of bestowing and receiving: opened, the two sides pour into each other; shut, each withers alone. The tension of walking it is that the door's own art is knowing when to swing — that neither the door held always open nor the door bolted fast is doing the work a door is for.
When Daleth is drawn, receive it as contemplation, not prediction. In the spirit of hitbonenut, bring to mind a relationship or exchange in your life and ask, plainly, whether its door is standing open where it should close, or closed where it longs to open. Notice where you are giving without pause and where you have stopped receiving. The letter foretells no meeting and no parting; it only rests your attention on the hinge, and on the wisdom of its timing.
