Tension
The house is the first container built for the infinite. This path joins the source to the dwelling that receives it: without a house the light has nowhere to rest, yet once built, beware mistaking the walls for the light.
Essay
Beth is the house — its pictograph is the floor plan of a dwelling — and its value is two, the first number that admits an other, an inside and an outside. In the Sefer Yetzirah it is one of the seven double letters, so called because each is sounded two ways, hard and soft; the doubles carry the seven planets between them, and Beth is assigned to Mercury, the quick messenger who runs between houses and never quite settles in one. It is the letter the Torah opens with, the first container built for the infinite.
Traditions differ on where the path is drawn. This site follows the GRA arrangement, which runs Beth from the Crown down to Beauty at the heart of the Tree — from the undivided source to the balanced centre that will hold it in the middle of everything. The later Golden Dawn attribution, noted here as an alternative, sets it between the Crown and Understanding instead. Along the path the letter's difficulty is the difficulty of any house: without one the light has nowhere to rest, yet once the walls are up there is the standing danger of mistaking the walls for the light. The tension of walking it is to build a dwelling for what exceeds every dwelling, and to keep a door in it.
When Beth is drawn, take it as contemplation and not prediction. In the spirit of hitbonenut, consider the structures you have built to hold what matters to you — the routines, the roles, the rooms — and ask which ones still shelter the life inside them and which have quietly become the point. Notice where you may be tending the walls and forgetting the light they were raised to keep. The letter foretells nothing; it only sets your attention on the space between shelter and confinement.
