The lines
- Line 1Tipping the cauldron over to empty out the stale dregs—an irregular start, but a legitimate one.
- Line 2With real substance in the vessel, the envious may resent you but cannot reach you.
- Line 3The handles are warped and the pot cannot be lifted, its fine contents going untasted—yet the frustration breaks at last like long-awaited rain.

- Line 5Yellow ears and strong metal rings—receptive at the center yet firm at the grip, exactly what lets the vessel be lifted and used.
- Line 6Carrying-rings of jade: firmness tempered to perfect gentleness, and nothing this serves fails to prosper.
