Six Doors · No. 12
第12卦 否 Pǐ · Standstill
Essence: Channels closed; withdraw and keep your worth intact.
I
Judgment
The channels are down: influence and merit no longer connect, and the wrong people hold the floor. Do not sell your principles for a seat in this weather; withdraw, economize, and preserve yourself. Stagnation is also a season—those who stay intact outlast it.

The lines
- Line 1Pull back early and together—like reeds, your roots are intertwined, and a timely retreat shares its luck.
- Line 2Flattery keeps small operators comfortable; the larger person accepts the blockage rather than join the chorus.
- Line 3Those holding places they have not earned begin to feel the shame of it; that discomfort is where the turn begins.
- Line 4Movement becomes possible again for those acting under real mandate; act on it, and those alongside you share the benefit.
- Line 5The strong one ends the standstill while still asking what if it fails—success held with that vigilance is lashed fast, like a line tied to mulberry roots.
- Line 6The stagnation is overturned at last—hardship first, joy after; and note that it fell to effort, not to waiting.
IV
All the doors
Every single-step transition available from where you stand.
- Line 125 无妄 · Innocence
Move without scheming; innocence is its own road.
- Line 26 讼 · Conflict
In conflict, settle midway; fighting to the end ruins both.
- Line 333 遁 · Retreat
Withdraw in good order while leaving is still your choice.
- Line 420 观 · Contemplation
Hands washed, offering withheld; seeing comes first.
- Line 535 晋 · Progress
Rise into full view by warmth and merit, not by force.
- Line 645 萃 · Gathering
People gather around a true center; prepare for what crowds bring.
