Essay
Third in the ascent stands Venus, the sphere of desire and union — the pull by which a soul reaches toward what it loves. Her metal is copper, warm and reddish, easily worked and readier than any other metal to marry: alloyed with tin it becomes bronze, with zinc it becomes brass. Copper joins. The ancients tied it to Venus through Cyprus, the island of her cult and of the mines that gave the metal its very name. Yet copper also greens over with verdigris, a beautiful corrosion — a fitting emblem for a love that can turn, over time, into the poison of clinging.
The vice of this gate is not love but misidentification: desire that demands immortal satisfaction from mortal things, projecting the infinite onto a finite face. Its refinement is clear-sighted love — loving what a thing actually is rather than what it seems to promise. This does not extinguish warmth; it only withdraws the gilded projection that was never really about the beloved at all. The operation is fermentation, and the image matters: clarified love is not meant to stay clarified and abstract. It is buried back into particular people and tasks, where it works in the dark and warm, like leaven in dough.
When Venus shows bound in a reading, it describes a season of enchanted wanting — reaching for a promise rather than a person; no shame is named here, only recognition. When she shows refined, it names affection with its eyes open. To ascend through this gate is to withdraw the projection without cooling the heart. To descend through it is the ferment: returning clear love into the ordinary, where, without that step, virtue remains only a concept.
