Essay
Sixth in the ascent is Jupiter, the sphere of abundance and expansion — the generous breadth that wants to enlarge, bestow, and bless. Its metal is tin, soft and low-melting, the metal of alloys and of the pewter that once furnished ordinary tables; the old masters gave it to Jupiter for its ready, expansive nature, the way it flows and joins rather than resists. But breadth curdles easily into appetite, and this sphere's gift has a shadow exactly the width of its virtue.
The vice of this gate is greed — the insatiable hoarding of abundance, the fist that closes because it fears that whatever flows away will not come back. The secret under the grasping is not malice but fear. Its refinement is generosity: letting abundance flow through oneself without damming it. The operation is dissolution, and the image is tender rather than violent — the clenched hand is not pried open but soaked until it softens, and the one who opens it meets the plain paradox that an open hand catches more than a shut one. This is a truth about posture, not a promise of gain.
When Jupiter shows bound in a reading, it describes a season of holding tight, measuring worth by what is kept; the reading only notes the clench, it makes no threat. When it shows refined, it names a life lived as a channel rather than a warehouse. To ascend through this gate is to let the fist soak open. To descend through it is to become a conduit, carrying the abundance of the heights toward the parched places — for, honestly done, distribution is itself an alchemy.
