Tau

Tau is the mark, the sign — its pictograph is a cross or an X, the oldest way of setting one's stamp on a thing — and its value is four hundred, the largest of the single letters, the seal at the far end of the alphabet. Among the seven double letters of the Sefer Yetzirah, each sounded two ways, Tau is assigned to Saturn, the outermost of the ancient planets, the slow one associated with limit, time and completion.

On this path the arrangements agree: both the GRA that this site follows and the later Golden Dawn attribution run Tau at the very foot of the Tree between Foundation and Kingdom — from the reservoir of inner images to the manifest world, the last step from what is imagined to what is lived. (The two schemes differ over many other paths, and this site draws the Tree by the GRA; here they happen to converge.) The mark is at once the seal at a journey's end and the boundary stone of the next. The tension of walking it is that all the inner work of the whole figure comes here to receive its stamp — and that landing in the concrete is not a demotion from the heights but the completion the heights were for.

When Tau is drawn, hold it as contemplation, not a prediction of an ending. In the spirit of hitbonenut, consider some long inner labour of yours and ask where it is asking to be sealed into an actual act, a real object, a lived commitment. Where are you hovering above your own conclusion, reluctant to press the mark down? The letter foretells nothing; it only turns your attention to the threshold where inner work becomes a finished, standing thing.
