Tension
Day after day the head wakes, gathering scattered dreams into lucid daylight. This path is the sunrise line between intellect and the deep image-world: the light must rise anew each day — yesterday's clarity cannot redeem today.
Essay
Resh is the head — its pictograph is the head in profile — and its value is two hundred. Among the seven double letters of the Sefer Yetzirah, each sounded hard and soft, Resh is assigned to the Sun, the light that rules the day and rises new each morning. It is the letter of the crown of the person, the seat of waking sense, the place where the scattered images of the night are gathered back into a single lucid face.
Traditions differ on where the path is drawn. This site follows the GRA arrangement, which runs Resh low on the Tree between Beauty and Foundation — the harmonising heart and the reservoir of inner images just above the world. The later Golden Dawn attribution, noted here as an alternative, sets it between Splendor and Foundation. On the path the letter is a sunrise line between waking intellect and the deep image-world: day after day the head wakes and gathers scattered dreams into lucid daylight. The tension of walking it is that the light must rise anew each day — that yesterday's clarity cannot redeem today, and that lucidity is not a summit once climbed but a dawn that has to keep returning.
When Resh is drawn, take it as contemplation, not a forecast of a bright day ahead. In the manner of hitbonenut, notice the ordinary miracle of having woken this morning into a coherent self, and ask what in you is still half-dreaming, waiting to be gathered into daylight. Where has an old clarity gone stale and come to need a fresh sunrise? The letter promises no dawn on schedule; it only turns your attention to the daily, unearned return of waking light.
