Tension
The back of the head is the place one cannot see oneself: instinct, sleep, the body's night side. This path bypasses the bright centre, joining feeling directly to densest matter — whoever walks it must learn to trust their feet in the dark.
Essay
Qoph is the nineteenth letter, its pictograph the back of the head, and its number one hundred. Among the twelve simple letters it corresponds to Pisces, the sign of sleep, dream and dissolution. As this site draws the Tree, following the GRA, Qoph is the path from Hod, Splendor, to Malkuth, the Kingdom. The Golden Dawn draws it instead from Netzach, Victory, to that same Kingdom. Both attributions run low across the Tree, below its bright centre, into the densest matter; the traditions differ over the upper end, and both are worth keeping in view.
The back of the head is the one place you cannot see on yourself — the seat of instinct, of sleep, of the body's night side. This path bypasses the luminous centre entirely and joins deep feeling straight to the heaviest, most physical ground. There is its tension: it asks you to move through a region you cannot observe, where the clear light of the mind does not reach. Whoever walks it must learn to trust their feet in the dark, to let the body and its older knowing carry them where sight cannot go first.
When Qoph is drawn, take it as contemplation, not a forecast read from omens. Sit with the letter as the unseen back of your own head, and let hitbonenut turn gently toward what moves in you below awareness — the instincts, the dreams, the bodily unease or ease you rarely question. Notice how much you distrust anything you cannot fully see or explain. The back of the head promises no clear picture. It only asks whether you can walk, for a stretch, guided by something deeper than sight.
