Mem

Mem is water, and it is water twice over: its pictograph is the wave, and among the three mother letters of the Sefer Yetzirah it is the one to whom the element Water is assigned. Its value is forty — the number of days a flood takes, the number of a long steeping — and its sound is the closed hum a mouth makes with the lips shut, the most inward and continuous of the consonants. Where Aleph is the breath and Shin the flame, Mem is the depth between them, the element that falls and gathers.

Traditions differ on where the path is hung. This site follows the GRA arrangement, which draws Mem straight across the Tree between Mercy and Severity — the open hand of giving and the measuring blade that answers it. The later Golden Dawn attribution, noted here as an alternative, sets it lower, between Severity and Splendor instead. On the GRA line the letter teaches hard power the lesson of water: not to strike the obstacle but to surround and soak it, to reach the low place and precisely there become a deep pool. The tension of the path is that utmost softness and utmost rigour turn out to be two temperatures of a single force, and walking it means holding both without letting either freeze.

When Mem is drawn, receive it as contemplation, not a prediction of calm to come. In the spirit of hitbonenut, sit with some hardness in yourself or your circumstances, and instead of meeting it head-on, imagine the patient way water works — around, beneath, over long time. Ask where a softer, more encircling strength might do what force has failed to do. The letter forecasts nothing; it only turns your attention toward the element that yields in order to prevail.
